PSP: Os resultados

Sony refuses to support PSP virus victims
With new pieces of technology come new ways to elaborately break them – thus, Sony's PSP finds itself on the receiving end of its first virus.

The Trojan virus infects the console by disguising itself as a firmware downgrader entitled ‘EXPLOT 2G PSP Team V1.RAR’, then renders the machine unbootable. The downgrader claims to reverse the PSP's firmware from 2.0 to 1.5 – a backwards step desired by those wishing to play emulated software and homebrew applications on their console. However, instead, the Trojan deletes key files from the OS, rendering it useless.

The virus, named by Symantec as Trojan.PSPBrick, is only a category one threat, unable to infect other machines of its own volition. However, Sony isn't overly bothered about the new development, since the act of downgrading your PSP's firmware voids its warranty. In other words, users who have become infected simply have themselves to blame.

"Sony Computer Entertainment does not condone the activities of those who modify their PSP, as it can introduce unauthorised and potentially dangerous software code into the PSP and invalidate the warranty,” says the official statement. “PSPs damaged through such activity will not be covered under the PSP's warranty. PSP firmware upgrades are made available from time to time to upgrade the performance of the PSP and address any potential security issues. SCE recommends that users regularly update their PSPs through the PSP's System Update feature to ensure that they always receive the optimum experience from their PSP."
